DAY 2 = 26.7 MILES

I received a text from Dennis bright and early this morning.

“Feet are a bit sore today. I’ll be switching to my new pair of shoes for today’s segment. Legs, mind, and body feel strong and ready for the day.”

Then with eight miles or so left to go, it began to rain.

Rain was only one of the several challenges that presented itself during today’s run. Yesterday was a late night so Dennis only had five hours of recovery time and very little sleep.  The 5-way intersections proved to be more tricky than expected so those slowed him down as well.  And to boot, his body was pretty sore today.

Dennis pressed on through those challenges by taking several ten to fifteen minute breaks and, in his words, “ate PB&J’s like they were going out of style.”  Weather, an exhausted body, a challenging course to navigate all overcome by a few fifteen minute breaks and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Let me ask you a question. What challenges in your life feel overwhelming? I am not saying that all of life’s struggles can be cured with a nap and a sandwich, but they can all be overcome.  It first begins in your mind. The real battle here for Dennis wasn’t the elements or his body that lacked sleep and recovery. It was the battle in his mind. He had to first choose to continue running.  Then from there he formulated a plan.

It was a long day, it was a sore day, but he finished! He didn’t give up.  Don’t you dare give up either.

“It ain’t how hard you can hit. It’s how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. It’s how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.” ~ Rocky Balboa
