DAY 1 = 12.4 miles

Dennis has arrived safely at the Phoenix Dream Center! The last two hands he gave a high-five to as he started his run belonged to his son Sebastian and daughter-in-law Glory who were waiting at the front of the church doors for him.  He knew they were going to attend, but he didn’t expect to see them just as he left the building to begin his run.  I thought that was pretty special.

We spoke for about 25 minutes while he was getting stretched out. It was fun to hear the chatter and laughs in the background coming from the small team that joined him on his first night.  He is not trying to crush any records so we will not be discussing the time in which he runs any of his scheduled miles for the day.  He was in very good spirits!  This is also the only time he plans on running at night. All other scheduled runs are planned for early morning and should be completed well before sundown.

Muscle memory is a thing Dennis and I talked about a few days ago. I remember him saying that once his body remembers what it is supposed to do, it’ll kick in and do what it needs to do.

“There were a number of times where I asked myself, what are you doing out here?  Once I made it half way, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it, but 3/4 of the way, I knew I was going to be okay.”

At one point, he said he was running near 7th Street when he got a text from a friend:

“Hey, I just drove by you. I guess you’re training for your big run to L.A., huh?”

Dennis replied, “Actually, that was the run.”

I thought that was fun.  Can you imagine, when this film gets released, and you’re one of the cars that drove by him as he was running?

We are just getting started, friends.
